Enemies in Love

This program explores the changing relationship between the viola da gamba and the cello: from contrast and rivalry to dialogue and unexpected closeness. Music by Marin Marais, Antoine Forqueray, Tobias Hume and Carl Friedrich Abel meets works by Domenico Gabrielli, Antonio Vivaldi and Johann Sebastian Bach, before both instruments finally come together in rare duo repertoire by Andreas Lidl and Joseph Zyka. What begins as a confrontation between two different sound worlds gradually turns into a conversation — sometimes tense, sometimes playful, sometimes tender. Enemies in Love is a program about contrast, resonance and the surprising beauty of opposites.
