Sympathia is a solo journey through the many voices of the viola da gamba: intimate, resonant, fiery, eloquent and theatrical. Music by Marais, Bach, Abel, Telemann and others unfolds as a sequence of sharply contrasted characters and sound worlds, held together by the instrument’s unique ability to sing, to resonate and to surprise. Rather than presenting the viol as a historical relic, this program reveals it as a living, modern voice: noble in sound, rich in colour, and capable of extraordinary emotional range.
